Study Groups

As part of its support of education in the fiber arts, the Weavers’ Guild of St. Louis sponsors ongoing study groups in several specialized areas of interest to members. These are informal groups that meet monthly, bimonthly or quarterly at a member’s home, local businesses or online via Zoom, to share ideas, results, problems and solutions, and/or to work as a group on joint projects in a particular area.

ART SPEAKS Study Group: Discussion and analyzation of works with an eye to encouraging artistic growth.

Bobbin Lace and Tatting Study Group: Focused on basic skill building and study of more advanced techniques.

Dyeing Study Group: Explores textile dyeing of all sorts with a wide variety of materials and methods.

Felting Study Groups: (Wet felting & Needle felting - two separate groups) Focusing on projects aimed at experimenting with a wide variety of different fibers and/or techniques.

Garment Study Group: Explores the creation of garments using handwoven fabric. Information, advice & critique.

Long and Skinny Study Group: Explores techniques for making “long and skinny” bands including inkle weaving and tablet weaving as well as exploring kumihimo (Japanese braiding technique).

New Weavers Study Group: This group welcomes new weavers looking for support and encouragement through the challenges of mastering the weaving process. Meetings are relaxed and focused on sharing recent work, learning helpful hints for selecting yarns, calculating and preparing warps, as well as best practices for weaving and finishing projects.

Professional Development Study Group: Focused on raising the caliber of our work to pursue exhibiting and selling both locally, nationally and online. Sharing support, encouragement and insight as well as best practices in preparation for the submission process.

Rigid Heddle Study Group: This group welcomes rigid heddle enthusiasts of all levels of expertise looking for support and encouragement while exploring and mastering this unique weaving loom. Meetings are relaxed and focused on sharing recent work.

Slow Stitching Study Group: Focused on sharing current projects and best practices as well as insight & encouragement.

Spinners and Knitters Study Group: Explores techniques and topics of interests to members. Bring a project to work on.

Swedish Weaving Study Group: Explores Swedish (and other Nordic countries) designs and weaving techniques.

Tapestry Study Group: Focused on basic skill building and studying more advanced tapestry techniques.

Structures and Color Study Group: Focused on exploring weave structures and the use of color in weaving. Meetings centered on support, inspiration and good conversation!
